Like you, I think there was something magical about dial-up access. Even an acoustic coupler modem with a speed of 300 baud (0.3 kb/s), watching the screen slowly fill with text was amazing.
A sad thought, but I would rather have a doormat covered in junk mail than my browser invaded ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
