Now it is decision time, time to pick your niche. But first, let me talk about goals and go back over the three fundamentals again.
What is the desired outcome here, what is your goal?
There are numerous reasons for starting a newsletter, and how you go about creating content, and the path you take depends upon these goals. Working out what your goal is with the newsletter before starting is the key to doing this right.
Are you trying to build a community?
People like to chat with like-minded people about their interests, hobbies, knowledge. Some prefer to shy-away from that aspect and just want to share information.
Building communities via a newsletter can be a very successful route to take, for example have a look at What to cook when you don’t feel like eating. They have over 242,000 subscribers and thousands of members paying $5 a month to take part in the chat where they share recipes. This is a very active community and just shows how you can make a serious income providing good quality information and a place for people to share their ideas.
The Technical Bit: You can choose to gatekeep chats on SubStack entirely, open up chat, or restrict thread creation to paid members only, I will discuss that later on).
